Hi All,
This is my first post on here and i know im not the only one to have posted regarding this subject, however i have suddenly got a bout of nervous excitement and felt the need to post!
Before i had read another members account of being at this stage I was as calm as a hindu cow, but after reading "it's like the queen is coming to stay!" my stomach suddenly flipped and i realized that i have already spent most of my spare money ordering a travel cage, food, toy's, avian safe cleaners etc and it hadn't even occurred to me that we may not even pass the house check! haha, I've not even tarted up the house or anything! however we are pretty clean and tidy anyway and i wouldn't like to be misleading, an honest portrail of our lifestyle is probably a good idea rather than going on a mad Lawrence Llewelyn Bowen style frenzy!
Just as reported by said previous forum user I am 'jumping at the phone' every time it rings hoping it will be the ACO to organise the home visit, only to be disapointed by yet another recorded message offering me a loan or a free cruise!
I would love to hear from anybody who can offer any words of wisdom.
Also while i am here i would like to thank Debbie for taking the time to ply me with useful information regarding all things related and for being the bearer of good news that we had been selected. A lovely lady. |

Hi Nick,
There really isnt any reason to be nervous, and as soon as your aco gets there you will realize that they have a way of making it so informal that with in 10 minutes its as if you have known them for years (just make sure you have the tea ,coffee, and biscuits on hand lol ) when my aco came she bought 2 of her own birds with her for me to meet well i was that excited i forgot the coffe and biscuits ,but then again if you put a bird infront of me nothing else matters ha ha but honestly there really isnt any thing to worry about as for doing a L.L.Bowen on your house when you do get passed and a birdy comes to stay weather its safe house or foster any pritty and primpy things go out the window they either get chewed or pooped on lol ...I am sure it will all be fine i know what you mean about jumping at the phone well even if they did miss you they will phone you back at the next opportunity.....So all in all i know its hard to do but try and relax and i promise it all will be sorted in a short while and you will be wondering why you were so nervous in the first place.. Hi Nick,
Im assuming you have already spoken to your aco and advised you are interested in safehousing? Or is it a bird you have applied for that you are waiting checking on? If could could advise what stage you are at and maybe we can help.  |

LOL NIck. Debbie here... Thank you for your comment - we are all lovely here so you have nothing to worry about!
You will be fine, I am sure. You would not have got as far as the homecheck if we hadn't believed you were the best home for the bird you have applied for (Please remember not to name any names at this stage).
I am sure your ACO will be in touch soon and just calm down before you make yourself ill.

Just recieved the call!
I must admit it has put me at ease(once again the hindu cow that i usually am), the lady who is coming is lovely, we had a long chat and she went through the whole process which if possible for her on the day may include bringing a bird to help check us out. Now the nerves have gone i am just really excited!
Thankyou to all those who have been writing and in reply to Mandy, it is a bird that we have applied for and are as far as homecheck stage.

Good Luck it wont be long now then told you they are all lovely and really put you at ease Just remember if they do bring a bird with them to the home check just dont forget to make the coffee and biscuits like i did lol(sorry Jayne ha ha ) xxx |

Just had the homecheck! lorraine came out and brought with her Mikey and Fizz her cockatoo's to help check us out! Both Nikki and I really enjoyed the whole experience, i did ask alot of questions and i really hope lorraine didn't mind as she was here for a couple of hours.
We did have tea's but we didn't have any bickies or cake to offer unfortunately but I think Mikey and Fizz enjoyed their visit as they got lots of cuddles and attention.
Now it is just time to wait and hope that from lorraines point of view everything was good and that the next stage goes well.
Is it ok to be nervous now? good nervous mind you! |

Good Luck !!!! nervous is ok but i really wouldnt worry sounds like you and the toos had a nice time its lovely when you get to spend time with the birds isnt it. If i was you i would sit back and relax now and just wait and see what happens next but ooh its exciting isnt it lol!! |

Mikey and Fizz are the BEST. You are so lucky to get a personal visit. I usually have to line up at a show for my cuddles whilst fighting off the rest of the show team!! Gorgeous birdies.

Yea, I loved those two, they are hilarious and really sweet. you can see why 'too owners endure all the relentless hard work with them when the result can be a pair like Fizz and Mikey!

Can somebody stop me from buying things for a bird that i don't even know if we are fully approved for yet?!!
Last night and tonight i havn't been able to sleep with excitement, just like i used to on christmas eve when i was a kid! and during my late night surf tonight, i decided that "it wouldn't be good to get caught short without an Avian First Aid Kit" so i went in search of one of those, after that I spotted something that looked brilliant from ZooMed called 'Avian Plus' however apon further investigation it would seem that you can only get the stuff in the states, so when i found AviPro Plus which happens to say 'Essential if your bird is travelling or stressed etc' I thought "oh yea i definately need to get some of that", a few toys later and i got to thinking "i need help, somebody stop me!"
On my travels i also came apon a couple of questions, one being that the first aid kit that i have ordered contains a 'caustic pensil' which i presume is a silver nitrate styptic pensil, i would like to know just how bird safe are they? i definately wouldn't be willing to use it except maybe in a truly critical situation as there is i can see a risk that inhalation would cause burns to the respiritory tract or if not just plain poisoning, then i thought i am a bit worried at the fact that they are included in the kit (it is also written in the blurb "to stop bleeding talons and 'Beaks'!) as somebody less caucious may use it and harm their bird. Am i right or are they actually fairly safe? Other than that the kit is pretty comprehensive and apparently designed by vets which to most people would give added credibility to said potentially dangerous pensil.
The other question i have is aimed at people who have experience with AviPro Plus, how often should you give this to your bird just in day to day life and can it be used as the birds regular vitamin supplement? |

Morning it was a late / early surf !!!!!
The information button at the top of the screen as a great list of must have first aid items well worth a look.
Whilst essential to have the kit if in doubt -any doubt straight to good Avian vet
We are all the same just think what you will be like when birdie arrives LOL
