As I'm new to this parrot thing, I've been browsing the web looking at toys, and as there's such a huge selection, I was wondering what your parrots favourates where. Oh, I also have a question on perches, and which ones are best?

For toys and perches and assorted other parrot bits and pieces try Scarletts Parrot Essentials, excellent prices and super quick delivery.

For me perches should be mixed size and textures to enable lots of exercise for precious feet!

I often give my boys and girls non parroty things like chubes, my lot love them! and the willow balls but sharp strong beaks make short work of those and you might as well give them £20 notes to shred!! LOL

hi nicola...scarlett who posts on the forums has a website with great offers and toys you should check it out.....as for favorate toys every parrot is different, my macaw wouldnt be without his olympic rings which comes in all sizes, its trying different ones and swap them round often so they dont get bored, as for other things you can use, i use normal wooden kids play blocks or wooden pegs as foot toys they love them....and you can get a rope dog toy with ball on, i cut it take the ball away and use the rope as a swinging toy lol.......lots of childrens toys can be useful....look in your second hand shop

I went to visit Scarlett today and we had a talk about toys. Even through I have 3 Amazons they play quite differantly. Bobbie is very gentle and his toys can be quite small but Nelson is distructive and they dont last long. My point is the toy depends on the bird not just his breed but its character.All by birds love willow balls but some last longer then others.

I'm shopping for a small bird, ie budgie/lovebird sized! The reason why I asked about willow things is I buy them for my bunnies, so if they can use the same things it would be great!

I'm looking at Scarletts website now, I've a load of things in my shopping basket, I just wondered if there's anything specific your birds love.

 

ETA: As my rabbits have both a bowl and bottle for water, I was wondering if I could use something like this www.netpetshop.co.uk/p-31290-ferpla...eeder.aspx as well as a bowl of water. It's just incase the bowl of water gets dirty and I'm not there to change it.

If it`s small bird toys you are looking for then a few I might suggest from customer feedback who have budgies and lovebirds are
BamBam Links £3 ( Clearance P3)
Chubes (clearance p2)
Things like the Weav R Maize, foraging palm bell etc are always nice on the Natural/Chewable toys.
I have a customer whos lovebirds sit all day in our willow hoops (Natural/Chewable P2)

On the clearance we have little bells n beads toys at £1 which would be nice for small birds.

we also have a new budgie buddy toy on the new products page which is an adorable toy and popular.

I would always advise having a concrete perch, we sell the Pollys ones, featherwight or Twister, great for keeping birds nails down and saves tripe to the vets to file them down. You would need small in either type, and the small cuttlebone perches are nice. Oooh, and we have some mini cuttlebones on the clearance page at 10p each too

Hi Nicola, my one of my budgies loves toys with bells on.  He runs round putting his head under each one.  Also the Carribean swing, a small rope swing and a long curly Boing thing hanging in his cage, plus shreddy things (with bells on), oh and a bath is essential , Baby Star loves them. Plastic chain links across the cage to hang things on and loads of different perches from them to land on and run along.   All the things are from Scarletts.

Some birds (large and small) love to destroy. Anything chewable: wood, rope, string, leather, cardboard, paper... you just have to try different things.

I ordered these last night: Bells and Blocks, Leather Heart, Carribean Swing, Small Chube and Willow Sticks Pack, although the willow sticks are more for the bunnies. So I still need to order a concrete perch really.

What are your opinions on cuttlefish bones? If I remember rightly, they used to be considered essential, but what about now?

Cuttlefish (I believe) is still considered a great source of calcium. My chirper won't touch it but I scrape some on his food or add calcium drops. Important for development (although not to excess) and for female birds who are egg layers. x

So it's better to provide one even if it doesn't get used then. Thank you!

Also for a perch/toy, I have a boing (rope spiral) and my little quaker adores it, as does Sharon L's tiel. They really let them make use of all the space in the cage, and aren't expensive.

Oh god, Harley has one that he uses...but what he uses it for I can`t say in case there are under 18`s reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lol

My lovebirds love their cuttlebone but it must be laid out horizontally and they like their kebabs hung above it and use it as a dining table, to wipe their mucky faces upon, to eat, to run up and down on, to sleep on etc etc. I go through large cuttle bones at an alarming rate! Then when I'm not looking an ammie sneaks in there and destroys it BIG time LOL.

Lovebirds are my favourite!!

Victoria, don`t forget we`ve got the cuttlebones at 10p, not sure what you usually pay but when it say 'mini' they are not actually that small and if yours go through a lot then might be worth a look.

So, erm, do you happen to like Lovebirds by any chance then?!!

Its my lovebirds fault that my flock now consists of 14 and covers canaries through to a cockatoo BUT my BIG personalities in small bundles are fantastic. They are like exorcet missiles and my life would just not be right without them, the bigger boys are lovely as well but they are just......................different. Can't explain it so am giving up trying!!

I must post a pic of Sammy the head humping luvvie, that boy has got some stamina, he would be at it 24/7 and he gets super excited if he sees a ponytail. Everyone who knows me knows I wear a football hat as I have had to cut Sammy out of a mass of tangled hairmloads of times!! Not to mention hubby's long hair too. We have his and her footie hats, sad but true!
