Well, Jasper The Barraband Parakeet joined our family this afternoon He is so chilled its crazy, at the moment he is just sitting on a java branch attached to his cage, making sure we all know he is here, a real good mixture of singing, words we cannot quite make out and various other strange noises!! So far so good.
He does not seem to bothered about eating or drinking much (has eaten a bit), but there are plenty of water bowls available so hopefully that's ok, any coments about eating & drinking appreciated.
All we have to do later this evening is persuade him that its a good idea to go back in his cage for the night, may have to try bribary with crisps!!
I will post some photos tomorrow |

Brilliant, looking forward to the photos! I was watching this one but had to google 'barraband' haha If he's hand friendly perhaps you could jump the gun....if hes thirsty but unfamiliar with the new layout.....perhaps offer a cool water/orange juice from a little bottle cap or something? You can never start the bribing too early |

Remember, only crisps with no salt. I buy the multipacks from sainsburys, the ones with the little bag of salt seperate. |

haha good luck chris. Every night for the last 500 nights I have had a little fight with Oodie when its 'back inside' time. Enjoy the 'three point hold'...foot foot beak. You prise a foot up? The beak relocates. You distract the beak? The foot finds a firmer hold. I made a HUGE mistake of giving up and for 6mths he lived outside at night. NOT GOOD!!!! Its all part of the ride! |

Whenever I have had to resort to bribery to get them in, it's been a biscuit, usually digestive but the spoiled ones insist in custard creams. Fortunately they don't quibble about the supermarkets own brands... |

I'm glad he's settling in. Don't worry about not seeing him eat and drink too much at first. Birdies always take a day or two to adjust. Charlie didn't move off the same perch for 48 hours and didn't drink. Now he shouts at me if I don't do things right Don't forget the pics Chris |

Well all I can say is go Jasper. He has even had a journey around the the house (which did worry us) but went straight back to the java tree fixed to his cage. He has been talking away happily all evening till about 7.30/8 when he started to go quiet, so we made an executive decision!! I pulled my sweatshirt sleeve over my hand, we got a crisp (salt free bought from sainsburys, thanks Sharon), I walked towards the cage quietly talking to him saying time for bed, while he moved to my shoulder. Then when I got near the cage, he jumped into it, up to a perch to grab the crisp from my sisters hand, and that was it!! Completely stress free for both Jasper and us. At the moment because nobody needs to go back in the room again, I have not dropped the front of the cover, was this a good move, or should I go in later and drop that down as well? (as the back and sides). He is still quiet!!!! Thanks everyone |

Is he used to being covered and is he in a dark room undisturbed till the morning? Our boys remain uncovered but their bedroom is dark and unused after us after birdy bedtime. If he will be dark and undisturbed, I'd be tempted to leave it for tonight. If you hear him whistling/talking you could then go in and cover him. Just a caution about approaching him in the dark, I suspect our 2 don't see so well in the dark and can get spooked if approached. Glad it's all going so well with your new baby |

Oh that's brilliant news, isn't he a little star. Bet you're absolutely over the moon.
So glad he's home with you all.
I'd be tempted to go in later and put the cover right down, starting as you mean to carry on I suppose.
I wish you all loads of fun and happiness together.

I must admit the main reason for questioning the cover was that although the room will not be used again tonight, on some nights it will. So maybe the start as you mean to go on theory is right. I will make a call in a while. Photo's tomorrow as long as he is still settled |
