Hi all, im sure you have been asked this a hundered times but im thinking about offering my house as a safe house and am wondering if having other pets will be a problem. we have two dogs, a lab x and an akita, a cat that rairly comes inside and a kakarikie(sorry if i spelt it wrong) who is all alone after his mate passed away, he is blind in one eye and will not come out his cage, it is a big one tho so he has lots of safe space to play in. any advice is apreciated before we commit to helping other birds in need.

Hi Claire,
Having other pets doesnt exclude you from safehousing. We do have members with cats and dogs.Obviously common sense, and caution are very important.
Never leave them alone in the same room together, monitor their behaviour, just as you would with a baby or young child.
Never leave anything to chance.
You yourself are the best judge of the temperament of your own animals in regard to others. For instance I had a dog many years ago, and I couldnt have brought ANY animal or bird in, as he would have attacked them.even though he was absolutely fine with people.
In later years we had a Sheltie, who was fantastic with anything at all, but again he wasnt left alone in the same room as the birds unless we were there.
So if you feel you can provide a safe environment, you would firstly need become a member, its £20 a year , and we require that you remain a member if you have any birdline birds. Once you have joined, contact your aco, who will be happy to arrange a safehouse check for you. Where abouts are you?
