Good morning people - New to the forum - Basically I own a blue fronted amazon - owned him for about 10 years now - bought him second hand - I think he's a boy coz he says good boy and i think hes about 25years + because he can sing blind date.
Anyhow - I have a question for you all -
When you go to work during the week what do you do with your parrots? I do keep mine in the cage - however Im always worried that hes bored - I think he may have a little snooze but what can I do ? Or what do you do when you have to go to work???
Hope you can help - coz sometimes I think maybe it would be best for him to give him to a santary - however it would break my heart and his to give him away however I do feel bad leaving him most of the time.
Hope you can help
SImon (And no Im unable to take him to work as much as I would like to. lol ) |

hi simon welcome to the forums. You like many off us have to unfortunatley go to work (still waiting for that lottery win ) many on here have to work full time to and cant take your bird along. Usually if im going to be out allday i leave the tv or radio on for them also make sure he has plenty off toys to occupy him and change them around regular so he doesnt get bored, and of course lots of love and attention when you come home from work. If you are really worried about the amount of time he is alone maybe a family member or neighbour would be willing to pop in odd times would love to see some pics and big welcome kerry x |

hi simon i work full time also and like kerry said, I make sure there is some out time in the morning before I leave, and loads of toys and things to destroy in the cage, and again big fuss when I get home. I am fortunate now that I work close enough to pop home sometimes at lunchtime and hubby has 2 days off during week with his shifts when I am at work, but that is only recent. I also leave tv or radio on for them but since safehousing for birdline that with other birdies for company they dont seemto miss me quite as much lol. I now get 5 mins when I come home of an evening before they demand out lol.

Oh he's lovely, what a sweet little face!
Have you tried leaving whole walnuts ie with their shell on in his cage when you leave for work? Mine spends time looking at it and even longer trying to crack the shell, as a little senegal this can take hours (until mummy gets the nut cracker out and lends a helping hand). |

My macaw isn't much into toys, apart from the jumbo pinata's from Northern Parrots, or Scarlett, but I find foraging toys work well. I can put cedar nuts into them, and he spends ages getting them out because they are his favourite thing in the world. |

My two Amazons absolutely LOVE a cardboard box. One big enough to get into, and chew. Mine are happy with an empty box, but some birds like to forage, and you can fill the box with shredded paper and hide treats in that. Boxes from Tesco that contained bottles of wine are ideal - and free! Doddie |

I leave boxes with peanuts in when I am at work I get the small ones that screws and nuts come it at work from the fitters. Each morning my birds get the fruit and veg but if they want the nuts or treats then they have to work for them. |

Have you considered a friend for your little one? I too work full time, but I have enough birds that they keep each other amused. Im often coming home to find another bird has learned one of the others noises or calls. Two birds in my honest opinion is better than one, and I do think if at all possible people should keep birds in pairs. I understand it doesn't always work out that way, but at least having another bird in the same room will keep him occupied. Doesn't necessarily have to be the same species either, just a simular size and attitude if you want them to be friends |

I dont leave mine in the cage - Mines always out - never goes in his - yesterday I came back from a cycle ride and he flew (bare in mind he cant fly at all - well not very well ) Hence why I can take him outside and leave him in the tree for hours on end - but I guess he flew crashed landed somewhere then walked into the living room - some how climbed up on the sofa then jumped to the table where I keep his little portable stand and sat there waiting for me - Its happened quite a lot this - I think he comes looking for me. I have considered another one - but too much time ect Im happy with him Boxes - i'll try that but he will look at it as if to say and what do you want me to do with that???? |

Our birdies are quite lucky as I work days other half works nights so there is often someone about. When I do go to work I always make a point of telling them where I am going and go round them individually to say goodbye see you later which Peefer Hahns Macaw will reply to. I always leave the radio on. Peefer is happy as long as he has his bell either to hump or cuddle ( he actually puts his wing round it for a cuddle). Jenny Conure is happy playing for ages under her paper on the bottom of her cage and U2 is happy with a mountain of wood to chew. She has a bowl with bits of apple tree and bits of pine dowling in. She has an apple branch in the bottom of her cage and a perch made of a bit of pine tree. She also has what was when she started a large pine log hanging from a thick piece of rope which she loves to play with. She also loves egg boxes, toilet roll tubes and advertising leaflets because they are light enough for her to carry around.Everyone thinks I'm daft going round saying goodbye but I'm sure they understand!! |
