Is he hand reared or parent reared? Im not sure how old they should be to be fully reared by a parent, but 8 weeks is VERY young for a hand reared sennie.  Be helpful if we know, can advise a little better then

Hi Sue,

I don't know much about Sennies but with birds in general you really aren't seeing proper personality for 2-3 weeks. Make sure you are as gentle and forgiving as possible during this period. They are massively clever and a bit frightened and disorientated.

Wannting to feel safe in his cage is a brill way for you to build up the relationship, use massive bribes in food and goodies. Billy sounds similar to Oodies Girlfriend:

first 2 days - stepping up, happy as larry (bird was petrified)
3-5 days - still steps up but prefers cage (bird chilling out)
5-8 day - Original bird being a knob, she was very lonely and frightened...flesh ripped from my finger
8-14 days all differences settled slow friendship with me, starting from zero again

Its a bit stylized (me and the new girlie are back in love) but I just wanted to emphasise that the results take the sort of time that new owners don't anticipate

Sue

Oodie was the same. I read a lot of stuff that warned of removal from the cage and mother at that age (in my case in retrospect).

It's all irrelevant, what has happened has happened.

If he has been weaned a little early you may benefit from offering him some extra hand rearing.

All parrots like eating mush, offer him some nice mush from your finger or a spoon...... if he appears to" glug it down" he is still showing the unweaned habit.

I have limited experience but after Oodie moved onto seeds, I continued to feed him mush (which he glugged) for months. I did it because I was told it increasees your bond and does no harm. Today he will crawl all over me expecting goodies.

You need help from the BL pros about what the mush should be made from.

I would LOVE a photo of a baby sennie

Yes Sue, this is handrearing.. Many breeders will leave babies with the parents for at least 3 weeks before taking them away to handrear. I am concerned about the age of yours and I have sent you a pm....

Senegals dont usually wean until they are around 12/13 weeks old, although they can be a little earlier than that too.

Dont agree with saying it's irrelevant Oodie, but Im not being nasty when I say that.  If the breeder sold this little one at such a young age it's possible that some of the behavior could be linked into being maybe force weaned.  First of all though it's not your fault hun, it's totally down to the breeder to sell at the right ages - Sadly though this doesn't always happen.

You say he is eating well?  Is he eating a variety of different food yet?  Did the breeder supply any hand rearing forumla with him at all?

And when you say he's charging, what do you mean? Is he flying, and dive bombing you? Or is he trying to bite when standing?

Sorry so many questions, last couple I promise  Has he ever grabbed your finger and seemed to be pulling on it repeatedly? And/Or has he made a screeching staticky type noise whilst opening his beak?

Sorry again for so many questions, just hoping to find out a little more, and then we can help you with the little fella xx

Ok, I have re read the opening post again. The baby is eating fine, soft seed, normal seeds, fruit and vegs.. So thats not too much of a problem..

Sue, when you go to take him out of his cage, is it possible to take him to another room? Away from his cage. He does sound a little young to be getting territorial over his cage, but this sounds like what is happening..

hi ,i have jand reared sennies my self mine were not done by 8 weeks of age, but if he is eating well that is ok. you say you have had him a week so he was 7 weeks of age when you got him. usually when they have been hand reared and considering his age they still want to sit with you a lot as they see humans as there food buddies with been hand reared . mine used to just walk along the floor all the time, i cant remember if they could fly at eight weeks of age. mine went at 12 weeks of age.
did you see any of your babies siblings , os he ringed

Ohh how lovely a baby sennie, it makes me all broody (if thats not too weird).

Mine is coming up 2 years old now, I had him/her at 13weeks old and the time goes so quickly, I dont want my baby to grow up (partly because I have the terrible twos ahead of me). Have you any photos??

It certainly cant hurt to try him with a little mushy food if you can.  If you can get him to take some off a spoon then it helps when they get older anyway if they ever need medication etc.  Poor little man, he's probably really confused, he's very young hun and needs a little more time to settle.  Good luck with him, and please dont hesitate to ask if you need any help
