A few years back I was told by a vet that potassium permanganate was safe to use on all animals to stop bleeding.  And since then I;ve used it on any cut nails etc with my birds.  Well tonight, I managed to cut myself when shaving my legs, so decided to use some of this stuff to stop the bleeding as it was quite bad.  Well, yes it stopped the bleeding in in instant, like any other time I've used it but OMG OMG OMG, it stung like nothing I've  felt before! It was absolute agony!  It felt like someone had stuck a hot needle into my leg, absolutely horrendous! So there is no way now that I shall ever use this on my birds again! I shall be trying everything else out now, to see if it stings when using it - I feel so bad I've used it on numerous birds, and I've inflicted that agony on them

Yeah it does, but at what cost? The sting is very nasty for me, so dread to think what it would be like for the birds! Never ever again I tell you!

Some time ago my vet also told me about this, and when I said that I thought it would be painful, he replied 'better painful than dead'. It's only for use in dire emergency - cornflour is fine for small bleeds, but if it's a strong one....
